Early Orthodontic Treatment Q & A

When should my child start seeing an orthodontist?

At the Village Orthodontist, Dr. Moles and his staff adhere to the recommendations of the American Association of Orthodontist, which encourages parents to bring in children for initial screenings at age seven.

At this stage in a child’s development, their face and jawbone are not yet typically set in place, and adult molars have generally started to appear. This, along with other developmental markers, allows Dr. Moles to get a handle on the basic alignment of the teeth, from front to back and side to side. It may also be possible at this point to determine whether there’s adequate room in the mouth for all of the permanent teeth, and, if not, to take action.

What does early treatment involve?

Early treatment involves performing routine evaluations of your child’s oral structures to detect oral health problems early on when they’re easiest to treat. It’s also the time when Dr. Moles can help instill good oral hygiene habits in your child that help ensure a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

He can help your child develop good brushing and flossing techniques that serve them for years to come. Another key part of early treatment is correcting bad habits, including thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, and mouth breathing.

Every child probably has a few bad habits, but some — like the ones mentioned — cause problems with the development and function of their teeth, jaws, and mouth. When habits like these form and you need help breaking them, Dr. Moles and his staff can offer assistance in the form of advice and orthodontic appliances.

Why is early treatment important?

Seeking early treatment with Dr. Moles early on can pay dividends down the road. By allowing him to evaluate and screen your child’s teeth, gums, and mouth, he can intervene and prevent future problems from developing, including:

  • Crossbite
  • Crowding
  • Protruding teeth
  • Underbite

Also, as your child ages, he monitors your child’s growth and determines the best possible time for metal braces, clear braces, Invisalign® for teens, or other orthodontic appliances.

When you seek early orthodontic treatment for your child, it increases the chances that Dr. Moles can find solutions and avoid more costly, more invasive treatment later on.
