Invisalign FAQ

Invisalign is one of the most popular treatment options at The Village Orthodontist, as it provides a discreet way to improve the smile for patients of all ages. Using the most advanced orthodontic technology in Frederick County, including Dental Monitoring, Dr. Moles is able to deliver results without anyone even knowing that patients are undergoing treatment. There’s plenty of information out there about Invisalign, and we understand it can get confusing at times. That’s why we’ve put together this list of frequently asked questions, and answers from your local experts. If you have any additional questions, feel free to call our office at (301) 874-4747.

Q: How long will my Invisalign treatment last?

A: Treatment time with Invisalign varies from one patient to another. You could be in treatment anywhere from six to eighteen months, depending upon a few factors such as:

  • The nature and severity of your orthodontic problem(s)
  • How compliant you are regarding wearing your aligners as directed
  • How compliant you are with keeping all your scheduled appointments with Dr. Moles

During your consultation appointment, Dr. Moles will be able to provide you with an estimate of how long treatment will take.

Q: Can I take the aligners out overnight while I’m sleeping?

A: No. You need to wear your aligners for 22 hours every day in order for Invisalign to work as it’s designed. You can take them out at mealtime and when you’re brushing and flossing. You can also remove them temporarily for those special occasions like school photos or interviews, as long as you put them right back in immediately afterward.

Q: Do I have to steer clear of any foods with Invisalign?

A: No, that’s one of the nicest things about Invisalign! You are free to eat anything you like including hard, sticky and chewy foods because the aligners are supposed to be taken out when eating. Just be sure to brush your teeth well after eating to keep your aligners and teeth clean.

Q: Is it OK if I smoke with the aligners in?

A: We don’t recommend it because the smoke can stain and discolor your aligners.

Q: What about chewing gum? Is that OK?

A: We don’t recommend chewing gum when you have the aligners in because it will stick to your aligners and make a big mess.

Q: How do I clean the aligners?

A: Just brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small strip of toothpaste, then rinse them off with cool water. You should never use hot water because it can warp the plastic aligners to make them unwearable.

Q: How often do I have to visit your office during the treatment process?

A: At the beginning of your treatment, we’ll ask you to come in every three to four weeks. After that, you will need to visit Dr. Moles every 8 to 12 weeks so he can check your progress to make sure your treatment is moving along as it’s planned.

Be sure to ask your treatment coordinator about Dental Monitoring, which allows patients to provide Dr. Moles with updates about their treatment progress no matter where they are.

Q: Will I be all done with my orthodontic treatment once I’m finished wearing my aligners?

A: No. Once you’re done wearing all your aligners, you will begin the retention phase of your treatment. This is when you will need to wear a retainer to prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original positions.
